The Junction – Queensberry's tech support blog

If you reopen an album in Photojunction after sending to Queensberry, you’ll notice it’s “locked” and cannot be modified.

Why? Because if you were to make changes to the album after we’ve received the order, we’d be making something different, which would certainly cause us confusion – you, us, or all of us – as you can imagine.

So if you need to make changes to the album, eg upload new files, or order an extra copy, you’ll need to duplicate the album first.

Cheers, Angelique

Just a heads-up that we’re changing the way we present ourselves on Facebook (our blogs will remain the same).

Until now we’ve maintained four separate pages for Queensberry, Photojunction and (lately) Workspace, but we will be merging these over the next few weeks. All going well, all the likes and post content will come along for the ride, and we won’t lose contact with anyone!

We don’t know how long the process will take, but meantime all our future content will be published over on queensberryalbums, and the other pages will become dormant. You’re very welcome to use queensberryalbums to ask your how-to questions about Workspace, Photojunction etc.

Cheers, Ian

PS Until the merge takes place (it could be a while) we will continue to monitor all the pages for any posts from you.

We’ve all had that crushing feeling when clients want to change the PERFECT album. Your original design destroyed. Heartbreak.

Easy way around this is to duplicate the album before making changes. That way you don’t lose your masterpiece, and it’s still there if the clients change their mind after seeing what they’ve done!

To duplicate the design, simply click the X2 button in the Product Column of the Project Browser.

Three more great uses for duplicating albums:

- You placed an order, but there was a problem with your files… so you need to fix a layout and create a new export. You’ll need to duplicate first because, to avoid confusion, albums are locked when you place the order.

- You placed an order, and want to order another one (maybe a sample), or change something and order another.

- You created the 30 side album you promised your client, but really, now they want a gorgeous 50 side book. Duplicate and build from the original. Or vice versa. I prefer the latter. Build the dream album and simply cut sides. (Don’t combine sides. This encourages the client to use the smaller book and have a crammed design – BOOO.)

Cheers, Angelique

Watermark stylesThe feature that everyone has been calling out for has arrived. Everyone knows that if you stick images online people will want to cut you out of the loop and copy them to their desktops.

Well, they say it’s better to be pirated than ignored, but we still don’t like it, so how can Workspace stop this happening to you?

First, a while ago we programmed Workspace to not allow the right-click copy and paste function.

But the big deal is our new Watermark feature. All you need to do is upload a watermark and apply it to your images.

Where to start? First, design your watermark in Photoshop. The proxies in Workspace are a maximum of 1024 pixels wide or high, so it needs to be a fraction of that or you’ll be creating a curtain rather than a watermark.

Save it as a PNG file with a transparent background. Then go to WATERMARKING in Workspace Settings and upload your file. Once imported you can choose a watermark style (click on the graphic to see them full-size).

Just remember you want the watermark big enough to hinder people from stealing images, but without compromising them. Done nicely it expresses your brand, like Queensberry’s wordmark in the graphic.

By the way, you apply the watermark to individual collections and albums as part of the sharing process.

Anyway, just another feature for your peace of mind.

Cheers, Pete

PS Handy hint for the © symbol: on Windows, press the alt key and type 0169. On a Mac, type Option-G.

You created the perfect album. Except the size is wrong. Your clients have changed their mind. They still love the layout, but they want a different book.

It isn’t the ideal situation. It’s actually why I prefer consulting the couple BEFORE laying out their book. Design for what they definitely want versus what you hope they will want.

But alas, you’re here. Stuck with the wrong size album.

Thank goodness Photojunction auto-saves your albums as templates. You’ve just saved a ton of time!

Just create a new album in the correct size (click the “+” button next to Products in the Event Window), add the correct number of layouts, and choose “Create Album from Templates” under the More Button. Photojunction will place the template layouts, in order, onto your album pages.

Now all you have to do is drag the images back into the apertures and you’re done.

I recommend this for flush albums. For production reasons, matted albums are a bit trickier, so make sure you get it right from the start. Depending on your supplier, or if the aspect ratio of the album has changed, you may still have to make some tweaks to the layout once it is put together. And remember, ALWAYS check your final exports.

Cheers, Angelique

PS Now that you know a new trick, who can create the fastest albums? The timer starts…NOW!

If you haven’t noticed, when you upload your images they can do so at different speeds, and then show up in Workspace out of order.

So how do we “sort” this out?

Well there are two parts to it. Are you wanting to sort your Collection in Workspace, or do you want to change the order your images appear on your website, eg in a slideshow?

Sorting the Collection. Just above your thumbnail images there are options to sort by file name, date or manually. To change the order manually, just drag the image thumbnail to a new position. Pretty straightforward stuff.

Sorting for your website. This takes a little bit of digging. Click on Event Details. From there you can select a slideshow sort method. If you select the manual method the images will reflect the manual sort you did for that collection in Workspace.

I did a little movie to show you how.

Cheers, Pete

PS To see your filenames, view your collection as a list (click Change View). You can also go to Settings/Miscellaneous and opt to show your filenames in either view.

If you’ve already got a website, do you need a Workspace site as well?

Workspace is a really handy platform for selling your photography, designing and proofing your albums, and sharing your work online to build your business. So yes, we think Workspace will be a great business asset, especially since we make it all about YOU.

Your brand is the star of the show. Instead of sending people to a generic Queensberry/Workspace corporate site to view their albums and images, Workspace lets you ‘brand’ the web pages and even integrate it completely with your existing site.

This movie explains how to modify your Workspace site so it looks like your main site, and shows you how to either remove the default navigation/menu links (if you don’t need them) or build in the navigation links from your main site.

Click the Vimeo button on the movie to watch it full size. High res is best.

Cheers, Anna (first time movie maker!)

Since you’re reading The Junction, you’re probably pretty much up with the play on Photojunction, and this post won’t apply to you. Here goes anyway. Maybe you can pass it on to a friend who needs it!

Believe it or not there are still people out there using Photojunction Retro. If you don’t know what Retro is, it’s a very cool program that was state of the art five years ago, when it was replaced by Remix.

All I can say is let it go. Just like Don Johnson’s stubble and no socks policy in Miami Vice, it’s had its day. The kindest thing you can do is put it down.

Seriously, if you want up to date features and up to the minute support, move over to Photojunction Remix. All our support team use and understand Remix, and they can help when things aren’t going your way.

If you are still on Retro we can’t help. It’s not that we don’t want to, it’s the fact that most of us were not here during its heyday, and haven’t used the program. If fact most of us don’t even have it on our computers.

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

Reduce frustration.

Reuse the space on your system by replacing Retro with Remix.

And recycle. If you’re still working on albums in Retro, you can import the PJF files into Remix and finish them there.

That’s something we can help you with, so if you have a friend who needs a hand letting go of Retro, get them to contact us at techsupport@queensberry.com. We’re here for them.

Cheers, Pete

Are you open for business? 24 hours a day, seven days a week? Do you take holidays?

The world has changed, and with Workspace you don’t even need to work the till.

Just upload your images to Workspace, create a price list, and share your Collections with clients. Workspace collects the money and pays you out monthly. So simple it hurts.

Check out our “how to” videos about price lists and shopping carts before you start sharing with your clients.

But wait, there’s more. You can sell around the world!

Set up price lists in the local currency for the States, UK, Canada, Europe, Australia and (or) New Zealand. Workspace will even help you work out the prices.

It doesn’t matter that the wedding was down under but half the family live in the UK: you (and your clients) can share your images with their relatives overseas. And what that means for you is sales, sales, sales. Let’s face it: if you’re not selling online to an international audience you’re limiting your potential. Not to mention the possibility of more couples coming to you for their photography.

Upload some images, set up a price list and share with your clients. Sit back and let us handle the rest. If you choose to print with Queensberry or one of our fellow Labs in the US and UK, we’ll print the order and deliver directly to your clients.
Or if you like work ;) you can do it yourself by choosing self-fulfilment. And to be serious, quite a lot of people are.

Spend a quarter hour with those movies, they could make more than your day.

Cheers, Pete

Workspace is already nine weeks old. We’ve been running since February and already we have tonnes of websites, albums and events uploaded by our fellow “spacers” out there.

I just made that name up, so let me know if you like it or not!

Anyway, if you’re not there yet you’ve got to join in the fun. There are photographers taking advantage of this new product and keeping their doors open 24/7 to clients past and future, and their friends, all over the world.

That’s the great thing about the Inter-web. It never closes (just goes offline occasionally).

In fact, thanks to WordPress, chances are I’m having the day off while you’re reading this (the 25th is Anzac Day in New Zealand and Australia).

Why am I telling you this?

Because you’ve only got five days to grab our half-price introductory offer and win free albums for a year. I know you can fool around with a free account until you run out of space, but this is an offer you can’t refuse.

I’d better sign off. I sound like Don Corleone.

Cheers, Pete
